The Moral Landscape of Vaccinations

Must Catholics receive a vaccination? Must Catholics avoid all or some vaccinations? Should people be compelled to receive vaccinations? Dr. John Brehany will present to us the moral landscape of vaccinations from a Catholic perspective and take questions from the audience on related subjects. A past CYACC speaker, Brehany currently serves as the Executive Vice President of the National Catholic Bioethics Center. In that role, he leads the implementation of the Catholic Identity and Ethics Review Program.

Dr. Brehany joined The National Catholic Bioethics Center in January 2015. He leads implementation of the NCBC’s Catholic Identity and Ethics Review (CIER) program, a comprehensive, in-depth assessment program for Catholic health care based on the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. Dr. Brehany also serves as a consultant on a range of clinical and institutional issues and teaches in the NCBC’s certification program.

From 2006 to 2014, he served as executive director and ethicist of the Catholic Medical Association. From 2000 to 2006, Dr. Brehany was executive director of mission services and ethics for Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, Iowa. Dr. Brehany taught systematic and moral theology at Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon (1991–1997), as well as courses in medical ethics at other institutions, including Saint Louis University Schools of Medicine and Public Health, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, and the University of Mary.
