Internships

Interns are unpaid and must commit to at least 5 hours per week for a period of 3 months or more. Beyond these basic parameters, internships are flexible and the terms will be finalized with the Personal Consultations Director. Internships may be renewed. Internships are fully remote, but interns are always welcome to visit in person. All internships, even those with a focus on operations or personal engagement, involve a component of mentorship on bioethical issues from the Personal Consultations Director.

Eligibility

All applicants must be faithful, practicing Catholics committed to magisterial fidelity.

Internships with a focus on fielding consults or content curation are open to (1) anyone who has completed the NCBC’s National Catholic Certification in Health Care Ethics; and/or (2) anyone who has completed or is currently enrolled in a Doctoral or Master’s degree program or its equivalent in theology, philosophy, bioethics, or a related field. Preferred candidates are those interested in engaging with bioethical issues in both principle and practice.

Internships with a focus on operations or personal engagement are open to (1) and (2), above, as well as (3) anyone with a general interest in bioethics who has completed or who is currently enrolled in at least the third year of a four-year undergraduate degree program. Candidates for these internships do not need to engage directly with the bioethical issues but will be exposed to them indirectly. Preferred candidates are those with interest, skills, or education in database maintenance, analysis and presentation of data, website management, information technology, human relations, marketing, communications, or non-profit development.

Preferred candidates

Internship candidates who meet some or all of the following criteria are preferred and will have an advantage over others in the selection process:

  • Current NCBC individual member or student member.

  • Understanding of and appreciation for NCBC’s mission and vision and particular type of work in the landscape of Catholic health care ethics.

  • Interested in developing or maintaining a long-term relationship with NCBC (membership, educational programs, publications, professional contact, etc.).

  • Educational formation in and/or passion specifically for moral theology, as it applies to medical issues and life sciences; or bioethics, theology, or classical philosophy (especially natural moral law).

Fellowships

Fellows are paid a small stipend and must commit to at least 10 hours per week for a period of 1 year. Fellows may apply for a second consecutive year, together with all new fellowship applicants, for a possible 1-year renewal. Fellows may not serve more than two (2) years. Fellowships are fully remote, but fellows are always welcome to visit in person. All fellowships involve a component of mentorship on bioethical issues from the Personal Consultations Director.
