Father Tad Appointed to the NIH Human Fetal Tissue Research Ethics Advisory Board
The NCBC’s Father Tad Pacholczyk along with 14 other distinguished bioethics leaders were recently appointed to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Human Fetal Tissue Research Ethics Advisory Board. This is a federal advisory committee that advises, consults with, and makes recommendations to the HHS secretary regarding the ethics of research involving human fetal tissue proposed in competitive NIH grant and cooperative agreement applications. Recommendations will address whether HHS should withhold funds from a proposed project because of ethical considerations. The first full-day meeting was held July 31, 2020.
The first hour of the meeting was open to the public, and included a welcome and charge to the Ethics Advisory Board from the chairman, an introduction of committee members, as well as a public comment period. The remainder of the six-hour meeting was closed to the public.
Science magazine criticized the pro-life composition of the board in a recent article.
